Day 17 Life has enough trouble in it without you going to look for more. Spend your time cultivating peace--especially in your own home. Deal with conflict when you have to, but be quick to forgive and overlook an offence when you can. Nobody likes a troublemaker and you're gonna need all the friends you can get. Spend your time building up your relationships so you will have their support when real trouble comes.
Pastor Chris' Paraphrase of Proverbs 17:1, 9, 14, 17 1 It’s better to eat stale crumbs in a peaceful home than a feast in a house where everyone argues. 9 A person who lets go of an offence wants love, but a person who keeps bringing it up drives away their closest friend. 14 Starting an argument is like digging a hole in a dam; once the water’s out, you can’t put it back in. So quit before you mess everything up. 17 A friend always loves you, and brothers were born to help in times of trouble. A wise person builds loyal friendships through patience, kindness, forgiveness, and love. Be there for others when they need you and they will be there for you when you need them.

Contrast the Upright and the Wicked
1 Better is a dry morsel and quietness with it Than a house full of [a]feasting with strife. 2 A servant who acts wisely will rule over a son who acts shamefully, And will share in the inheritance among brothers. 3 The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, But the Lord tests hearts. 4 An evildoer listens to wicked lips; A [b]liar pays attention to a destructive tongue. 5 He who mocks the poor taunts his Maker; He who rejoices at calamity will not go unpunished. 6 Grandchildren are the crown of old men, And the glory of sons is their fathers. 7 [c]Excellent speech is not fitting for a fool, Much less are lying lips to a prince. 8 A bribe is a [d]charm in the sight of its owner; Wherever he turns, he prospers. 9 He who conceals a transgression seeks love, But he who repeats a matter separates intimate friends. 10 A rebuke goes deeper into one who has understanding Than a hundred blows into a fool. 11 A rebellious man seeks only evil, So a cruel messenger will be sent against him. 12 Let a man meet a bear robbed of her cubs, Rather than a fool in his folly. 13 He who returns evil for good, Evil will not depart from his house. 14 The beginning of strife is like letting out water, So abandon the quarrel before it breaks out. 15 He who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the righteous, Both of them alike are an abomination to the Lord. 16 Why is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, When [e]he has no sense? 17 A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity. 18 A man lacking in [f]sense [g]pledges And becomes guarantor in the presence of his neighbor. 19 He who loves transgression loves strife; He who raises his door seeks destruction. 20 He who has a crooked [h]mind finds no good, And he who is perverted in his language falls into evil. 21 He who sires a fool does so to his sorrow, And the father of a fool has no joy. 22 A joyful heart [i]is good medicine, But a broken spirit dries up the bones. 23 A wicked man receives a bribe from the bosom To pervert the ways of justice. 24 Wisdom is in the presence of the one who has understanding, But the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth. 25 A foolish son is a grief to his father And bitterness to her who bore him. 26 It is also not good to fine the righteous, Nor to strike the noble for their uprightness. 27 He who restrains his words [j]has knowledge, And he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding. 28 Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is considered wise; When he closes his lips, he is considered prudent.

1 It’s better to eat stale crumbs in a peaceful home than a feast in a house where everyone argues.
2 A wise servant will be given authority over their master’s disgraceful child, and will get an inheritance like one of the family. 3 Silver and gold are refined by fire, but Jehovah tests to see what’s really in your heart. 4 Good for nothing scoundrels love to hear things that stir up trouble; a liar listens closely to gossip and believes everything they hear. 5 If you mock a poor man, you insult the One who made him. You’ll pay for making fun of his troubles. 6 Grandkids are the crowning achievement of the elderly and children admire their parents. 7 It’s not good when a fool talks too much; it’s even worse when government leaders are dishonest. 8 A gift is the key to winning support; people who give them do well in life. 9 A person who lets go of an offence wants love, but a person who keeps bringing it up drives away their closest friend. 10 Constructive criticism has more effect on a smart person than one hundred lashes on a fool. 11 Taking over and getting their way is the bitter heart of everything an evil person does. Therefore, God sends a stern ambassador to deal with them. 12 It’d be better to run into a mama bear who thinks you stole her cubs than a fool bent on stupidity. 13 Evil will always plague the life of someone who does evil to those who’ve been good to them. 14 Starting an argument is like digging a hole in a dam; once the water’s out, you can’t put it back in. So quit before you mess everything up. 15 Jehovah is just as disgusted when someone ignores wickedness as when someone condemns innocence. 16 It doesn’t make any sense to pay tuition for a fool when they don’t want to learn.  17 A friend always loves you, and brothers were born to help in times of trouble. 18 It’s just stupid to make a deal to co-sign a loan for someone. 19 Someone who loves drama loves sin; people who love to “make an entrance” are bound to trip up and fall flat on their face. 20 Someone with twisted thoughts won’t think up anything good, and those who manipulate the truth get into trouble. 21 A senseless child causes their parents a lot of grief; a wicked one steals their joy. 22 A joyous attitude helps you heal, but a broken down spirit sucks the life right out of you. 23 An ungodly person accepts a secret bribe to bend the verdicts of the justice. 24 An arrogant fool searches to the ends of the earth, but a smart person turns to Wisdom. 25 Arrogant, lazy, children are a sad disappointment to their father and a source of bitter grief to the sweet woman who gave them life. 26 It’s just not right to penalize someone who did the right thing or humiliate them for being fair. 27 Few words? Smart! Intelligence like that is rare indeed. 28 Even a dope that stands there in silence seems like a mastermind. They look like a genius because they keep their mouth shut. |

Day 17 of Pastor Chris' Paraphrase of Proverbs Devotional
I'm a pastor, dad, husband, and child of God. I'm broken, but blessed. The cracks are where the Light shines through.
My mission is to help people grow closer to God with every breath and step I take. I gave my life to Christ at an early age and have grown closer through the years, spurred on by the study of the Bible, my church family, and the Chrysalis and Walk to Emmaus Communities. I accepted the call to full -time ministry as a pastor in 1999 and have served 4 different churches in Georgia. Music, preaching, and teaching are the heart of my ministry.
Outside of the pulpit, I enjoy many hobbies that help me blow off steam. These include martial arts, woodworking, blacksmithing, gardening, cooking, and being creative. I'm a jack of all trades and a master of none. My philosophy is use what you have, do it yourself if you can, learn something in the process, and have lots of fun. This blog is a place to share it all with you.
